Every business today should have a Facebook business page. You should not be using your personal page to build your business. We see a lot of small businesses using their personal page and we don’t recommend that. You want to keep them separate.
As you grow you’ll want to track page visits, run ads, use your social links in your email signatures, newsletters, sign-up forms, etc. If you mix your business and personal information on one page you will confuse your audience and you won’t have a clear branding page or message. Do you really want your family and friend posts to be visible to your business colleagues and customers? You shouldn’t. So keep them separate.
You do need a personal profile page on Facebook to get a Facebook Business Page. It will be linked on the backend but it won’t publicly show on your business page unless you want it to.
What you need to get started:
Before you start a new Facebook Business Page you will need the following:
- Your Business Name
- A short description of your business
- Profile Photo (Sizes: 170x170px Desktop, 128x128px Smartphones)
- Cover Photo (Sizes: 820x312px Desktop, 640x360px Smartphones – or 400x150px)
For photos, you can use either JPG or PNG files. Your profile photo will be cropped to a circular shape in your ads and posts but square on your page profile, so keep that in mind when you are uploading it.
Set up your Facebook Business Page:
Go to https://www.facebook.com/business/pages/set-up to get started.
Click on the Create a Page button.

Choose the type of business page you want to set up.
We chose Business or Brand for this article.
Click Get started.
You will now be directed to a page that looks like this where you will add all your business information:

Page Name: Enter your Business name on the page name line.
Category: Start typing a word or two that best describes your business then choose the category from the drop down list that appears that best describes your business.
Address: Enter the address for your business.
Phone Number: If you have a business phone line enter it here.
Check Box: If you only sell online, you can check this box to hide your address and it will only show your City and State/Province.
Click Continue.

Add your profile photo/logo here so people will be able to find and recognize your page.

Add your cover photo so that when someone lands on your new Facebook Business Page they will know what it’s about and it will grab their attention.
You can use a program called Canva to design a great cover photo for your new Facebook Business Page.
Now you will be directed to your new business page.
Invites
It will ask you if you want to send out invites to your friends list from your personal page to start spreading the word about your new page. We recommend you wait to do this step. You don’t want to send out invites until your page information has been completed and it’s ready to be published to the world. You don’t want someone to land on a half finished page.
Add Your Products or Services
Add your products and services with pictures and prices (if applicable) to your page. Look at your competitors pages to get an idea how they showcase their products or services to get tips on how to set up your page.
When you first created your page you chose a category that automatically picks a page template for your new page layout. If there are tabs that show or are missing that you want your page to have (ie: reviews, videos, etc.) you can change it.
To change your page layout:
- Select Settings in the top right of your page
- Select Template and Tabs
- In the templages section, select Edit – It will show the template you are using and the one Facebook recommends along with others to choose from.
- For a description on each template, select View Details.
Go through each page section (about, videos, services, products) and add as much detail as possible. This information will tell your potential customers all about you and your products or services.
TIP: About Section – This information will appear in search results so make sure it’s clear, detailed and informative.
Call-to-Action Button
Make sure you add a Call-to-action button on your page. You can choose one of the following:
- Book Appointments
- Contact your business by chat, email or phone
- Download an app
- Buy something
Congratulations. You now have a Business page.
Share Your New Facebook Business Page
- Your personal news feed
- Join groups as your business
- Build your own group page linked to your business page
- Share your page on other platforms (ie: Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube)
- Put a link to your page in your blogs, newsletters and email signatures
- Send out invites to your page to your personal contacts
Start posting regularly to your page and grow your audience. Make up a posting plan on what you will post and how often. Be consistent in your branding, voice and posting schedule.
